In post-war London, a young writer Juliet is trying to find a plot for a new book, but she decisively does not want to write about the horrors of war, and other topics seem either boring or inappropriate. A case comes to the rescue — in the form of a letter from one inhabitant from the island of Guernsey. It turns out that even ordinary residents of a distant island love to read, and the unknown Dawsey, who got his hands on a book that once belonged to Juliet, asks for advice on a good bookstore. In Guernsey, books are now tight, since the island was occupied by the Germans throughout the war years. This is how the correspondence, or rather, the romance in letters, between Juliet and the islanders begins. The story, which began as a plot for a new book, quickly turns into its own story with a completely unexpected ending. Based on this novel, a feature-length film by Mike Newell was shot in 2018, which received recognition from many film critics.
